Spring is finally in the air. Baseball season is upon us and along with the crack of the bat, it is bringing some cracked, broken and damaged windshields along with it. It has been a tough pre-season for windshields owned by people who just may have picked the wrong parking spot while attending a spring baseball game. In one case, the damage was self inflicted.
The Cub's Kyle Schwarber got into the action when he hit a homerun during batting practice in Mesa, Arizona. The ball spider cracked the windshield of fan Peter Gesler. The story has a happy ending however, as Schwarber signed the windshield before it was donated to the Cubs Annual Charity Auction. Proceeds went to Cubs Charities.
Schwarber's shot was matched just a couple of days later when Seattle's Nelson Cruz created the need for another spring training windshield replacement. “Boomstick”, as he is called, hit a batting practice homer that smashed a windshield at Peoria Sports Complex parking lot.
Phillies third baseman Mikael Franco showed some pop and damaged the windshield of teammate Freddy Galvis after hitting one out of the park during batting practice. Another player, Cesar Hernandez had apparently parked in Freddy's regular parking spot, forcing Galvis to choose the ill-fated alternative.
The real stunner, however, came from Milwaukee Brewer catcher Jacob Nottingham. Not only did the rookie smash the windshield of a rental car of a team staff member early in spring training, but he recently really defied odds. Nottingham actually slammed a home run that damaged his very own car, smashing right through the windshield.
Here in the Minneapolis, St. Paul and Twin Cities area as we get ready for the Twins season, it just may be a good idea to watch where you park. Even the little leaguers we watch can cause some damage.
