After a window on your car is broken, outside elements can enter your car. This includes things like pests or rain and snow. However, you may not have the money or your car may have glass that needs to be ordered or custom made, meaning it takes time to get the glass to make the repair. If your glass has been broken in your car, follow these steps to secure the car and keep outdoor elements out until the glass can be repaired.
Remove as Much of the Broken Glass as You Can
The first step to protecting your car after the window has been broken is to remove as much of the broken glass as possible. Wear protective gloves and pick up any large shards of glass you can remove. Then, use a shop vacuum to vacuum away any excess pieces. Be sure to insert the hose as close to the window seal to remove any glass that remains stuck inside. You may have to vacuum your car multiple times to be sure all of the glass is gone.
Wipe Down the Window Seal and Frame Area
Dampen a soft cloth with water. Then wipe down the window seal and frame area. Take your time and remove as much dirt and dust as possible. This will help ensure the tape can stick to the area in the next step. Dust and dirt can prevent tape from sticking which can hinder your ability to properly seal off the area.
Seal the Window
Using clear packing tape, begin running strips vertically across the opening of the window. Start on one side of the window, on the inside of the car, and lay a strip vertically so that the tape touches the window frame. Then layer another piece vertically, overlapping the first piece. Continue this until the pieces overlap one another and cover the window. This works better than cardboard as it gives a better seal, keeping moisture out. Always do this from inside the car, not outside, as the tape can cause paint to peel. If you don't have packing tape, you can use cardboard in a pinch, but it can get wet and become damaged, allowing moisture to seep into your car. Tape will not.
