The windshield on your car may last as long as your car does. However, this is not always the case. There are issues that may pop up that can cause your windshield to need to be replaced. If your windshield develops any of these issues, an auto glass repair shop should examine your windshield to determine whether it needs to be repaired or replaced. Here are three common problems that can occur with your windshield that may cause your windshield to need to be replaced.

The Windshield is Chipped or Cracked

One of the most common reasons why your windshield may need to be replaced is because it is chipped or cracked. There are different reasons why a windshield may chip or crack. It can become chipped or cracked if road debris, such as a rock, hit the windshield. It can develop cracks or shatter due to the impact of a car accident. Or it can crack due to temperature extremes. For examples, if you pour hot water over an icy windshield, it can crack. Some chips or cracks can be repaired, while others may not be repairable, requiring your windshield to be replaced.

The Windshield is Loose or Rattling

Another reason why your windshield may need to be replaced is because it is loose or rattling. Car accidents are the most common reason why your windshield may be loose or rattling. An impact can damage the seal that holds your windshield in place. Once the seal is damaged, there is no way to replace it. Removing the auto glass and the seal is required to fix the problem. It makes sense to use fresh glass when completing this repair, as the old piece of glass may be thin and weak due to age.

The Windshield is Pitted

The last common reason why your windshield may need to be replaced is because the windshield is pitted. As you drive down the road, sand, gravel, dirt and road salt used to melt ice pelt your windshield. As they hit, they can leave behind tiny little indents. Overtime, these indents can turn into pitting as these items continue to hit the windshield. A pitted windshield is more likely to chip, crack or shatter, can distort your vision while driving, and can cause glare while driving. Replacing the windshield is the best solution for heavily pitted windshields.
