Windshield glass is made of laminated glass, and the other windows in a vehicle are typically tempered glass.

Leave it to our auto glass experts to further explain what this means!

Windshield Glass vs. Other Vehicle Windows

It is important for all vehicle glass to be tough and shardproof, which is why all windows in a vehicle are made of safety glass required by the OEM.

Meanwhile, the windshield goes through an additional lamination process to protect passengers.

Tempered Glass (Safety Glass)

Also referred to as safety glass, tempered glass is glass that has gone through a tempering process of extreme heating and rapid cooling. This process makes the glass extremely tough – up to five times stronger than regular glass.

It is not just strength that makes tempered glass ideal for vehicles. When tempered glass does break, it breaks into small pebbles instead of shards.

Laminated Glass

Laminated glass is made by placing a piece of plastic between two pieces of glass. The glass is then heated in an oven called an autoclave.

During an accident or other extreme event that may break the windshield glass, the pieces will stick to the plastic, therefore keeping the driver and passengers safe from shards.

The additional layer of protection for the windshield is a shield from projectiles on the road. The three layers ensure that most small items that come into contact with the window while driving will, at most, break the outer layer.

This area is much more likely to be hit by debris, and the driver in control of the vehicle is behind it, so it is vital to have this additional defense for the windshield.

The safety glass on the rearview window and passenger windows is tough and will hold up in extreme conditions, but it does not need to be as resistant to road debris.

If you are dealing with side window damage, covering it with a trash bag or tape might seem like a good idea and can be a good temporary solution until you can get the repair done.

Do not ignore it because leaving it as is puts your vehicle at risk. If a rainstorm breaks out, your interior and electrical components are compromised, and a broken window is an invitation for burglars that can cost you more than just a replacement.

Original Equipment Manufacture (OEM) Glass Standards

All glass in a new vehicle must meet Original Equipment Manufacture (OEM) standards. The standards are set for every part of a new vehicle by the engineers who designed it.

Because you're getting an original quality replacement, this means the glass is guaranteed to fit your vehicle frame and any ADAS features for easy calibration, and you will meet OEM standards for continued safety in your vehicle.

The biggest disadvantage you'll come up against is pricing because, in most cases, OEM glass will be more expensive than aftermarket, and your insurance company may try to talk you out of it or say it's not covered to save them a couple of bucks.

It also means you will be choosing from aftermarket glass products. While these can be just as good, you want to ensure they meet the Auto Glass Safety Council standards so your car is as safe as possible.

<![CDATA[Construction Just Cracked Your Window. Now What?]]>https://only1autoglass.com/Blog/entryid/1193/construction-just-cracked-your-window-now-whatWhen driving by a construction site, you may end up with construction damage. Once that damage occurs we can help you with your window repair or replacement. Look to us for what that next step is following when construction just cracked your window. We are there for that “now what” moment.

]]>
When driving through road construction or following a construction vehicle, windshield damage can happen before you realize it. That moment when a rock bounces up and makes a loud "ping" noise scares all of us.

Unfortunately, this happens more often than we like. We can help you through what happens after construction just cracked your window.

Who Is Responsible for the Repair?

It might be tempting to race after that construction truck to get their information so you can send the repair bill for your windshield to them. After all, the rock started there, fell off, and hit your windshield.

It is the truck driver's fault, right? Unfortunately, no, it is not the driver's fault. Once that rock hits the ground, it becomes a road hazard.

Who is responsible for the repair? Sadly, you are.

What About Insurance?

If you have full coverage insurance on your car, chances are you have glass coverage. This coverage falls under the comprehensive portion of your auto insurance coverage

Check with your insurance company before damage happens to make sure you have this coverage. Our professionals can work with you on filing insurance claims for your rock chip repairs or windshield replacement.

Windshield Repair or Windshield Replacement

You should never ignore windshield damage. As you drive your car, hitting bumps and causing vibrations make damage to your windshield worse. Damage can weaken the windshield's structure.

The windshield protects you as you drive down the road. You want that protection to be as strong as it can be without damage.

Here are some things to look for to decide whether you need a windshield repair or a windshield replacement.

You Can Repair the Windshield If Your Rock Chip..

 • Is smaller than a quarter
 • Is not in your line of site
 • Has not created a run or larger crack
 • Has not made a hole through both layers of your windshield

You Need a Windshield Replacement When..

 • The damage is in your line of sight
 • You have an old windshield with other damage
 • The damage causes a run or crack larger than a dollar bill
 • There is a hole through both layers of your glass

Keeping Your Windshield Safer in Construction Zones

It's no secret that driving through a construction zone will put your vehicle at a higher risk of sustaining damage, but knowing what to look for and applying some easy-to-follow steps can reduce the risk.

1. Flying Rocks & Debris

When you're driving through a construction zone, you'll inevitably encounter some loose gravel, dirt, and possibly even other types of debris on the road. Commercial and standard vehicles' tires can easily pick that stuff up, and if you're following other drivers too closely, their tires can propel rocks and other debris straight at your windshield.

What can you do to avoid this? Maintain a safe following distance at all times. Generally, that means keeping at least three seconds of space between the front of your vehicle and the rear of the vehicle in front of you.

For additional protection when road conditions are poor or visibility is limited, do your best to keep at least five seconds of space between your vehicle and the one in front of you.

2. Bumps & Holes in the Road

To prep roadways for repairs and updates, construction crews may need to break down the existing asphalt to some degree. That process can easily leave behind large bumps, divots, holes in the road, and height differences between new and old pavement while roads are still under construction.

If you drive over those areas too quickly, the force generated by your tires hitting the pavement can easily cause minor chips or cracks in your auto glass to spread. If outdoor temperatures are particularly high or low and you hit a hole or bump with enough speed, the impact alone could crack a completely intact windshield.

3. Unsecured Tools, Work Materials, & Equipment

Commercial drivers are trained to secure their loads; however, there's always a risk when transporting any products via commercial equipment. If the items aren't tied down correctly, external factors like weather or even the right amount of force when running over a bump can completely unravel the load, turn equipment and tools into projectiles, and crack or smash your windshield.

Avoiding this potential window damage is easy: Keep your distance from any construction vehicles you see on the road. It's better to arrive a couple of minutes late with an undamaged vehicle than to get there on time with a huge chip or crack in your auto glass or a noticeable dent in the body of your car or truck.

<![CDATA[Can You Window Tint a Damaged Windshield?]]>https://only1autoglass.com/Blog/entryid/1236/can-you-window-tint-a-damaged-windshieldIf you drive around the Twin Cities, you’ll notice vehicles with various levels of tint on the window. Tint is ideal for reducing UV rays and heat that can turn a car into an oven. However, if you place tint over a broken window, you’re wasting your time and money on the job. Before you tint your windows, bring your car to Only 1 Auto for a complete glass inspection and auto glass repair. We can restore any window in your car, truck, or SUV.

]]>
For many vehicle owners, tinted windows are non-negotiable. But what happens to that tint if the glass suffers damage? Does it have to be replaced? Can the affected window be repaired while keeping the tint intact?

At Only 1 Auto Glass, we get plenty of questions about repairing minor damage to tinted auto glass, and we'd like to help clear up some confusion. With 15 locations throughout the Twin Cities metro, plus our extensive fleet of mobile repair vehicles, we're the most convenient choice for auto glass repair in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area.

And, with over 200 years of combined experience among our technicians, you can trust we'll take the best possible care of your tinted auto glass.

Let us outline how the auto glass repair process works for tinted windows and what results you can expect.

What Happens to Window Tint on Damaged Auto Glass?

If you have a tinted window with a small rock chip or crack, it's important to repair the damage as soon as possible. Though minor window damage doesn't necessarily present a major risk to your safety, it can create a visually unappealing issue on tinted glass.

Without prompt attention, the tint surrounding the damaged area can loosen and peel away from the glass. If you allow the problem to persist, eventually, you'll need to replace the tint on the entire window.

If you want to avoid an unnecessary expense, prompt auto glass repair is essential.

How Does Auto Glass Repair Work With Tinted Windows?

If you place tint over a broken window, you're wasting your time and money on the job.

You may not get a clean finish if you try to place tint over a damaged window. Chips and cracks may become noticeable, and you may see a groove along the cracks. Your tint finish will look messy and unprofessional at best.

If your car is insured, it costs you nothing to replace the glass, as most insurance companies will pick up the bill and not raise your rates. Take the time to visit Only 1 Auto Glass for a complete auto glass repair and install the tint. You are guaranteed a cleaner finish.

Bring your car to us for a complete inspection and auto glass repair. We can restore any window in your car, truck, or SUV!

Repairing a Tinted Window

Several types of auto glass chips and cracks can be repaired, but in some cases, opting for repairs may render the glass un-tintable. Generally speaking, minor glass damage can be repaired on tinted windows, but the damage's depth, size, and location ultimately determine whether repairs are possible.

Although the repair will allow you to keep the glass intact and reduce the likelihood of further damage, the filled area may no longer be eligible for tinting due to the difference between the repair and the rest of the glass.

So, if there's any chance you may not be able to have your window retinted after the repair, you should opt to replace the damaged window instead. That way, you'll have a clean slate to work with that tint can easily be applied to.

Only 1 Auto Glass can fix a tinted window as quickly as we can a plain window. However, we may need to remove the tint to make the repairs. One of our ASE-certified technicians can remove the tint, repair the glass, and have the finish ready for you to apply a new tint.

The repair process for tinted windows is almost identical to that for non-tinted windows, with just a couple of additional steps.

Here's how it works:

 • A technician gently removes the tint surrounding the damaged area of the window.
 • The damaged area is thoroughly cleaned to ensure no debris remains in the crevice.
 • The technician injects a liquid resin filler into the chip or crack to seal the damaged area.
 • After the resin sets and dries completely, the technician will reapply the new tinting film to the area.

Because tint can be tricky to apply, we highly recommend avoiding DIY auto glass repair. To achieve the best results, look for an auto glass repair specialist who has experience dealing with tinted auto glass.

Keep in mind that repair costs for tinted windows may be more expensive than those for non-tinted auto glass due to the additional work involved.

Have a Professional Re-Tint After the Repair

You may be able to apply your tint after getting a damaged window repaired, but that doesn't mean it's a good idea unless you're a pro. When an auto glass repair specialist removes the existing tint around the damaged area, the new tint must align perfectly with the old.

If you mess up and overlap it even slightly, you'll have created an ugly blemish that necessitates more work and expense.

Quality of the Tint

If you try to place tint over a damaged side window, you may not get a clean finish. Chips and cracks may become noticeable, and you may see a groove along the cracks. Your tint finish will look messy and unprofessional at best.

The higher quality of tint means better protection against UV rays, decreased glare reduction, increased comfort, and more privacy and security. Not to mention, getting professional retention is going to make sure your vehicle's looks are restored, and in this situation where your window is damaged again, it means less risk of it shattering and keeping you safer behind the wheel.

If your car is insured, it costs you nothing to replace the glass, as most insurance companies will pick up the bill and not raise your rates. Take the time to visit Only 1 Auto Glass for a complete auto glass repair and install the tint. You are guaranteed a cleaner finish.

Window Tinting & Minnesota Law

No law prohibits tinting a cracked or chipped window. However, you may get pulled over if you tint side windows filled with blemishes because it limits your vision. Minnesota's law is not specific as to the size of allowable cracks or chips. However, it is illegal to drive a vehicle if the windshield is discolored or cracked in a way that limits the driver's clear view.

It's important to understand that it's up to the ticketing officer's discretion whether a crack or chip in the windshield obscures or limits the driver's view in a way that is or could be considered unsafe. Putting tint over a hard-to-see-through glass may raise a red flag with a patrol officer.

Only 1 Repairs All Car Windshields & Side Windows

When you had your window tint professionally applied or did the job yourself, you shouldn't attempt to repair chips or cracks in the glass on your own. Not only are windshield repair kits difficult to use, but they typically also yield low-quality repairs that don't last and compromise the integrity of the glass.

What's more, repairing tinted auto glass requires removing the tint before the repair itself can commence. An auto glass repair specialist can easily remove the tint in a small area immediately surrounding the chip or crack, but you may be unable to do the same.

If you mess up the tint in one area by trying to accomplish the job yourself, you'll likely have to remove all of the tint and have it reapplied. And if you attempt to perform the glass repair on your own, you may not even be able to have the damaged area re-tinted if the DIY repair didn't turn out quite how you had hoped.

Envision this: You are driving down the road when a large rock smashes right into your windshield. When this occurs, you will likely need to have your windshield replaced.

As you look to get the windshield replacement done, you may notice some repair shops state that they will waive your insurance deductible if you use them. This may leave you wondering what this means and if it is beneficial to you.

Here is some information you need to know.

What Does It Mean if an Insurance Company Will ‘Waive Your Deductible?’

If your windshield needs to be replaced, your insurance will generally cover the cost of the replacement if the repair is needed due to an accident. An accident is considered a collision or something hitting your windshield while you are driving, such as a rock. It can also be caused by someone smashing your windshield on purpose.

In order for your insurance to pay for the repair, you will need to pay your insurance deductible. If a company states that they waive your deductible, you will no longer need to pay your insurance deductible.

How Can Some Windshield Repair Companies Do This?

There are a couple of different reasons why a windshield repair company may be able to waive your deductible.

First, they may charge a bit more than other companies that don't waive deductibles to make up the cost of your deductible.

Secondly, they may see such an increase in business from waiving deductibles that the increased volume makes up for waiving deductibles.

What Do I Need To Know if I Want To Use a Company That Waives Deductibles?

If you are considering using a windshield repair company that waives deductibles, always compare their price quote to the other companies that don't waive deductibles. This will help you know if the price they are charging is fair. Second, always check to see if there is a limit to the deductible amount they will waive.

Some companies may only waive up to $250 or $500 in deductibles, while others may waive up to $1,000. Finding this out helps to ensure you weren't paying part of a deductible when you thought the entire thing would be waived.

How Does Filing an Auto Glass Claim Affect Your Insurance?

Your auto insurance is in place to cover damage to your vehicle. Even with auto glass replacement or repair, if you choose to file a claim, it can increase your rates because now the provider may see you as a greater risk.

Before you file, it's always recommended to contact the company about how they handle the insurance claims and check to see what coverages you have in place, including any deductibles that need to be paid.

If someone else caused the damage, you have accident forgiveness on your policy, or you're just dealing with smaller cracks and chips, it may be wiser to pay out of pocket than to risk raising your premium. Start by contacting your provider, then get at least three service estimates to compare products and pricing and schedule the repair.

You can also contact one of our team members, and we can help advocate for you if you need support navigating the insurance claim process.

<![CDATA[Can I Replace My Windshield in the Winter?]]>https://only1autoglass.com/Blog/entryid/134/can-i-replace-my-windshield-in-the-winterYou are driving down the road when a large rock comes flying at your windshield. This leaves you with a crack in the driver's side of your windshield. Unfortunately, it impedes your ability to see while driving, and it's illegal to drive in Minnesota with auto glass damage that's in your line. Therefore, your windshield must be replaced.

But, if it is the dead of winter and freezing outside, can or should you get your windshield replaced? If you've never gotten a new auto glass during the snowy, cold season, here's what you should know about getting a windshield replacement in winter.

Should Windshields Be Replaced in Winter?

Windshields can be replaced when it is wintertime. However, the products used to adhere the glass in place may differ. This is because you need a product that will cure faster in winter. You may also need to have the glass replaced at a windshield replacement shop versus using a mobile auto glass installer who comes to you (most shops won't perform mobile replacements during winter anyway).

If you replace the glass outdoors when cold, you may run into problems because glass naturally contracts a bit when it is cold out. Humidity control is another problem that makes outdoor windshield installation undesirable.

It's often humid during winter, and all that moisture in the air can interfere with the adhesive's ability to set and cure properly. If the adhesive used to secure the glass to your vehicle's frame doesn't set as it should, your windshield could easily end up with leaks. If the seal is really poor, it may even start popping off the frame, or it could fly off completely during a collision.

What Is Considered Cold for Glass?

Unfortunately, there is no baseline for what is considered cold when it comes to glass and auto installation. It depends on the type of glass that is being installed and the curing products that are used.

As a general rule of thumb, if the temperatures are around freezing, the products used to cure your glass windshield will differ from outdoor temperatures above freezing. And ideally, you want to install glass when it's temperate outdoors. If a mobile company can't keep the glass warm enough in their truck, they may advise you to have it installed in a garage or glass repair shop.

Moisture Can Cause Major Problems

If you're scheduling in-shop windshield repairs, you won't need to worry about moisture-related problems since the shop environment can be tightly controlled. But if you're getting mobile auto glass repairs, you need to know that moisture inside the damaged area can cause serious issues with the quality of the chip or crack repair you need.

Moisture can interfere with the adhesive's ability to cure and secure the glass to your vehicle's frame. While it's possible to get a mobile windshield replacement, it may be in your best interest to schedule this service in the shop to minimize the risk of moisture interference and adhesion issues.

Should I Hold Off Until Spring to Replace My Windshield?

No, you should not wait until it warms up outdoors to get your windshield replacement. Doing so can put your safety and auto glass at risk for more severe damage.

Cold temperatures can cause an existing crack to grow in your windshield or even make it shatter entirely in a worst-case scenario. If your windshield needs to be replaced, cold temperatures shouldn't prevent you from having it done.

There may be special challenges that go along with replacing a windshield when it is cold, but a reputable auto glass repair shop can help you navigate those challenges with ease.

Caring for Your Windshield After Replacement

Just as you should take special precautions after getting a windshield replacement when it's warmer outdoors, you should take those same precautions if you get your auto glass replacement during winter. When you get your vehicle back, make sure you:

 • Avoid slamming doors, as doing so can create vibrations that may interfere with curing.
 • Let the retention tape sit for at least 24 hours.
 • Drive slowly on bumpy roads and over potholes and speed bumps.

<![CDATA[Science Explains the Easiest Ways to Defrost Your Windshield]]>https://only1autoglass.com/Blog/entryid/126/science-explains-the-easiest-ways-to-defrost-your-windshieldOne of the worst things about driving in the winter is waiting for your windows to defrost before getting on the road -- especially when you're already running late.

There are many urban legends surrounding the easiest ways in which to defrost your windshield. From using shaving cream to kitty litter, some have been given more credence than others.

Fluctuating temps are no joke when it comes to your glass, and while everyone (hopefully) knows you never add hot water to a frosted windshield, it’s sometimes hard to find the best solution. But there is one surefire way to determine the best, most efficient ways to defrost your windshield: science.

As it turns out, there is an easier way to defrost your windshield than just blasting the defroster, and the pros at Only 1 Auto Glass are here with the answers!

What Science Tells Us

First, it's important to understand why your windows fog up in the first place. All air around us has at least some amount of moisture in it that we can't see.

This is called water vapor. The higher the humidity level, the more invisible water vapor is in the air. Once the humidity level passes 100 percent, it forms condensation. This is, essentially, what causes your windows to fog up.

But what most people don't know is that hot air can hold more moisture than cold air. Meaning warm air is like having a bigger towel to dry off, while cold air is like trying to dry your body with a washcloth. The same logic applies to clouds, fog, and even your breath on a really cold day.

Since warm air can hold more water vapor, it can remove condensation faster. Mark Rober, an enthusiastic YouTube sensation, says he used science to discover the best way to defrost a window. This video explains it best.

Here's what he found:

 • Turn the heater on at full blast
 • Turn AC on
 • Turn off the inside air circulation
 • Crack open the windows

Rober's experiment found that this method cleared the windshield twice as fast as any other combination of A/C settings. And while this can be ideal for some circumstances, if you don't have time to wait for your car's heater to warm up, we have a few other proven methods we stand by

Apply De-Icer Spray to the Glass

If you’ve never used de-icer spray to get stubborn ice off your windshield, it’s time you give it a try. Compared to an ice scraper, a de-icer is safer for your auto glass because it minimizes the risk of unintentional damage and the need for subsequent windshield repairs. De-icer spray also eliminates ice faster than an ice scraper and is remarkably easy to use.

If you want to give de-icer a try, choose from one of the following options:

Alcohol-Based Spray

You can make a homemade de-icer on the cheap by combining one part water and two parts 70% isopropyl alcohol. Pour this solution into a spray bottle and apply a light layer to the ice on your windshield.

Saltwater De-Icer

Using a saltwater solution is another highly effective way to de-ice your windshield. Just pour room-temperature water into a spray bottle, add a few spoonfuls of salt, let the salt dissolve, and spray the solution on your icy windshield. For best results, use road salt rather than table salt.

Store-Bought De-Icer

Commercial de-icers are widely available at auto supply shops and big box stores. These also work well, but they’re considerably more expensive than their homemade counterparts, so if you’re de-icing almost daily, opting for the DIY route is far more economical.

Avoid Chipping or Pounding on the Ice

Even when you use a plastic ice scraper to de-ice your windshield, you need to use it properly. Whatever you do — even if the ice is super thick and stuck on — don’t pound or chip at it! Your windshield is vulnerable to damage in extreme temperatures.

If You’re De-Icing With a Tool, Make Sure It’s Plastic

If you have a dedicated ice scraper in your vehicle, great! That’s what you should always use for de-icing to avoid scratching your auto glass and needing windshield repairs. But if you don’t have an ice scraper to get the job done, whatever you do, don’t use metal tools!

Using tools that are super rigid or hard to de-ice your auto glass is a disaster waiting to happen. You can easily scratch or chip the glass with just a hair, too much pressure, or a slip of the wrist. Without prompt windshield repair, that damage will likely grow since chips and cracks are susceptible to spreading as temperatures fluctuate throughout the day.

Use Tepid Water

If you’re in a major hurry and need to de-ice your windshield quickly but can’t find your scraper, try using tepid (never hot!) water to get the job done. To de-ice auto glass with tepid water, you only need to pour the water slowly and steadily onto the glass.

Do not use hot water! Much like an ice cube cracks when it’s exposed to a sudden, dramatic temperature change, your auto glass can do the same thing when exposed to hot water.

It’s also a good idea to have your defrost on while you do this. But make sure you always start your defrost on low and gradually increase it to high to avoid exposing your windshield to a drastic temperature shift that results in needing a replacement or repair.

Combine Defrost, De-Icer, and Scraper for Rapid Results

If you’re in a huge hurry and need to get ice off your windshield quickly, combining all the tools in your toolbox is the best way to get the job done. Here’s what you need to do:

 • Apply one of the three de-icer sprays above to your windshield and allow it to sit for a few minutes.

 • Start your vehicle and turn on the defroster.

 • After the de-icer has had a few minutes to work and your defroster has also started to melt the ice, use a plastic ice scraper to gently chip away at the chunks of ice on the glass.

 • As you loosen pieces of ice, sweep them onto the ground and use your windshield wipers to remove any remaining de-icer or water.

Tip: If there are any chips in your windshield, it’s in your best interest to avoid using an ice scraper until you handle the necessary repairs. Any amount of pressure on the glass can cause the existing damage to spread.

If you have comprehensive insurance coverage in Minnesota, your windshield repair is fully covered with no deductible.

The only question is, what are you waiting for?

The longer you wait to get your windshield fixed by an Only 1 Auto Glass repair specialist, the greater your chances are of suffering the consequences. Read below to discover what could go wrong and how it can affect you.

Why Damaged Windshields Are Not Safe

Any structural damage to a windshield already compromises its ability to protect you in situations when you need it to shield you the most. If the glass has cracks, chips, or missing pieces, the odds are against you that the entire windshield will stay intact in a collision.

Your best bet is to fix the windshield imperfections as they happen and restore the windshield's stability.

Small Cracks & Chips Only Get Worse

Like any other component in your car, glass damage only worsens with time. Therefore, you should bring the vehicle to our Only 1 Auto Glass repair shop to fix small issues before they become big problems.

Fixing small dings and chips in your windshield takes far less effort and will help reduce the labor costs involved in the process. Most windshield chips can be handled in a short period.

Your Insurance Company May Not Cover the Entire Repair

Although insurance companies are required to waive their deductibles when paying for windshield damage, they can set a cap on how much they are willing to pay for the entire repair or window replacement.

You are better off hiring a certified window repair expert from Only 1 Auto Glass to solve the issue now before it costs you more money than it has to.

You & Your Car Become a Liability

Chances are, you are not the only one who operates or rides in your vehicle 100% of the time. If you are toting passengers or allowing other drivers to operate your vehicle, you owe it to them to ensure your automobile is as safe as possible.

This means fixing all damaged glass around the entire vehicle. Our glass experts can inspect your entire vehicle to ensure all windows are tip-top and your car is safe.

You Could Get a Ticket

It is against the law to drive with a cracked windshield as it obstructs your vision field, and any damage to the windshield glass may be a traffic violation.

Any crack in your windshield, mainly if it is right in your field of vision, must be repaired or replaced as soon as possible.

The Structural Integrity is Compromised

Each component of your vehicle serves a different purpose, and because the windshield is a direct support for the roof, it plays a critical role in keeping the cars structural integrity together.

If a collision or accident occurs, the windshield can prevent the roof from caving in and keep everyone inside safer, so complete the repair as soon as possible.

Malfunctioning Airbags

Airbags are designed to keep you and your passengers safe if there is a collision, and when the unit goes off, it bounces off the windshield, which can help decrease the force of the crash and soften the impact.

Damaged windshields mean they're less likely to handle the force of the airbag being released and could result in the glass shattering or breaking, leaving you and your passengers vulnerable to the full force of the collision.

How to Tell It's Time for a New Windshield

If your windshield is damaged, you likely worry you'll need to replace it. Since this can be costly if filing a claim with your insurance doesn't cover it, it's no wonder this makes you apprehensive.

You will be relieved to know that, in many cases, windshield damage doesn't mean you have to throw out the entire window. Instead, the damage can be repaired. When the damage is significant enough that replacement is necessary, you'll be glad to know we have reasonable rates on custom-fit windshields.

What criteria are used to determine whether to repair windshield damage or go with replacement? There are a few simple guidelines we use to make the decision. By going over them, you can avoid surprises and be better prepared for what will be needed to get you safely on the road.

Here are the typical determining factors we use when deciding if a windshield is repairable or needs to be replaced.

The Size of the Damaged Area

The standard guideline for size is that the damage shouldn't exceed the dimensions of a dollar bill. Replacing the glass is recommended if a crack is pretty long or a hole is thick.

Because of this, it's important to get repairs right away, especially with cracks. Cracks in auto glass will spread if not addressed, so what was once a repairable amount of damage can grow until a replacement is necessary.

Fixing them quickly will prevent this!

The Location of the Damage

A crack, ding, or other damage in the driver's field of vision can impair the view of the road even after repairs. In these cases, we recommend replacement.

It's also dangerous to try to repair damage in any of the corners of the windshield. That's because weakness in these areas can cause the window to shatter unexpectedly, even after a repair.

Therefore, we always recommend a replacement for this damage to maintain safety.

The Amount of Damage

In most cases, windshield damage only affects one or two areas. However, hailstorms, gravel spilling from trucks, and other such things can cause pockmarks or cracks in multiple places on the window. Then, your windshield must be replaced to ensure it won't shatter without warning later on.

Whenever you notice an imperfection in the glass of your car's windshield, you should take it to professional Auto Glass Installers and have it inspected.

If you live in the Minneapolis, St Paul area, you're lucky because Only 1 Auto Glass has the best Auto Glass Installers in the Twin Cities.

They specialize in the following:

To find out if your windshield can be repaired, contact our team today. Our expert technicians will examine your window and recommend the most affordable and safest option for its condition.

Let Only 1 Auto Glass Handle all Your Small & Large Repairs

Several things need to be considered when you have a damaged windshield. The financial cost is usually the biggest concern for most people, as they are unaware of how important the windshield is to the vehicle's structural frame.

The sooner you repair a rock chip or a cracked windshield, the less likely you will need a windshield replacement, which is more expensive than a windshield repair. So, don't waste time getting your car to the auto glass installers; at least evaluate the damage.

Take your vehicle to Only 1 Auto Glass, where we'll inspect your windshield and explain your options for windshield repairs, windshield replacements, and rock chip repair in Minnesota. When it comes to auto glass repair or replacement, nobody can restore your windshield like our experts!

We provide a comprehensive service that includes repair, replacement and help you file your insurance claim. Call us today at 651-789-1111, and let us give you a free estimate!

<![CDATA[The Dangers of Covering Your Vehicle Windows With Plastic]]>https://only1autoglass.com/Blog/entryid/1397/the-dangers-of-covering-your-vehicle-windows-with-plasticHow many vehicles have you seen around Minneapolis with plastic covering a window? Ever wondered whether that’s a safe option if your window sustains damage

Both you and your passengers are more vulnerable to injury when you drive around with plastic on one or more of your vehicle’s windows. For starters, if a vehicle slams into the side of your car, nothing could prevent any flying metal or glass from propelling into the cabin.

At Only 1 Auto Glass, we’re here to tell you that driving around with a plastic window covering is far from safe. Here are just a handful of the many reasons why.

It Won’t Stop Flying Objects

Ever witnessed a pebble or two collide with your windows while driving on the freeway? When you drive with a plastic window covering, there’s nothing to stop those types of objects from flying into your vehicle at high velocity.

Driving at moderate to high speeds can easily kick up road debris. Not only will your vehicle stir up rocks and other objects on the pavement, but so will the other vehicles around you.

Because auto glass is (obviously) thicker and more resilient than plastic, it provides significantly heightened protection from road debris and other flying objects. Moreover, if you’re involved in a collision while your window covering is still in place, that covering won’t prevent shattered glass or shards of metal from entering your vehicle through the window.

And unfortunately, serious injuries are inevitable if you or any of your passengers are in the path of a flying piece of debris. As such, if any of your windows sustain damage, head to an auto glass repair shop as soon as possible.

Don’t just cover the damage with plastic and call it a day because, in most cases, your insurance will cover the repair without increasing your premiums!

Plastic Impedes Visibility

Safe driving requires full visibility in every direction, but if you attach plastic over damaged auto glass, you immediately hamper your normal driving visibility. And even if the plastic is semi-transparent, it still doesn’t give you a complete view of what’s happening around your vehicle.

Lack of full visibility doesn’t just endanger you and your passengers but also everyone around you. Without an unencumbered view of your surroundings, you won’t be able to:

 • See vehicles in your blind spots

 • Observe pedestrians waiting to cross the road or walking through crosswalks

 • React promptly to approaching emergency vehicles

 • Change lanes safely

 • See approaching traffic while pulling out onto roadways

To help ensure the highest degree of safety for yourself, your passengers, and the drivers and pedestrians around you, avoid driving with plastic on your windows if possible. Auto glass replacement is relatively inexpensive and requires a very small time commitment — and it could potentially save you from a devastating accident.

A Plastic Window Makes Your Vehicle a Target for Theft

Want someone to burglarize your vehicle? Then you need to have broken auto glass repaired or replaced as soon as the damage occurs.

We hate to say it, but driving around with plastic on your window is essentially an open invitation for thieves. After all, you’re giving anyone open access to your vehicle. And if you must park in public areas, either for work or simply to run errands, your risk of theft increases exponentially.

It doesn’t take a brilliant thief to break through a side window covered in plastic. They merely need to find a sharp object, cut the plastic, and open the door. It takes only a few seconds but could cost you your vehicle.

Most owners do not adequately attach the plastic to the car. Breaking in could be as easy as pulling the plastic away.

Plastic Cannot Prevent Water Leaks

You already know electronics and water don’t play well together. All it takes is one heavy rain to beat on the plastic, and the water will start leaking into the interior. Not only can the electronic controls inside your door sustain damage, but if enough water enters your vehicle, it can also damage the controls in the center console and dash.

Even waterproof tape won’t stop torrential rain from entering your vehicle, and it can damage your car's finish or tear the seal on the frame. If your side window is destroyed, our mobile auto glass repair service can arrive on-site to fix your window. It only takes a few minutes to replace the glass. We can protect your car’s interior from rain and snow.

It’s Awful When It’s Cold Outside

During the winter, the temperatures can be almost unbearable. The cold wind is magnified when you’re driving down the road at 60 mph.

No matter how high you turn on your heat, the cold winds can cut through the plastic and keep the inside of your car freezing. You’ll also waste energy and gas cranking your heat too high to compensate.

Auto glass repair is more affordable than you think. Instead of wasting your time and money with plastic, we can repair your window and keep the heat inside your vehicle this winter.

Got a Broken Vehicle Window? How to Handle It While You Schedule Auto Glass Repair

A shattered vehicle window is unfortunate for any driver. But if you can’t go to an auto glass repair shop immediately, a broken window can leave your vehicle vulnerable to further damage.

Water, pests, and debris can easily enter any vehicle through a partially intact window, and the interior damage those things can cause can be extensive. To protect the interior of your vehicle while you find the time or funds to pursue auto glass replacement, follow these tips:

Clean Up as Much of the Broken Glass as Possible

First and most importantly, if there are loose glass shards inside your vehicle or on the door, clean up as much of the glass as you can. Wear thick, protective gloves for this job, as glass fragments can instantly injure you unless you’re super careful.

After you’ve removed all the large pieces of glass, use a high-powered vacuum (preferably a shop vac) to pick up any smaller fragments. Remember that even if you can’t readily see them, tiny shards of glass might be sitting on seats or the floor. For safety’s sake, it’s best to vacuum the entire area, even if it appears glass-free.

Clean the Window Frame & Seal

Even a high-powered vacuum might not clean up all the tiniest shards of glass around the window’s frame. That’s where a thorough cleaning comes in. To clean the window frame and seal, use a damp, soft cloth and wipe the area down thoroughly.

In addition to picking up the shards of glass, cleaning the area also removes dust, dirt, and grime that can interfere with your ability to seal the window properly during the next step. Once you have the frame and seal completely clean, it’s time to seal the window to prevent moisture and debris from entering your vehicle.

Cover & Seal the Window

When you need to cover and seal off a vehicle window, you have a couple of options: use a plastic cover with tape or use tape alone.

Here’s how to accomplish the job:

Plastic Cover and Tape

If you’re using a plastic sheet to cover the open area, you can use a clear drop cloth or even a plastic bag.

To cover the area, stretch the bag across the window and secure it with a few small pieces of tape. Then, measure out long strips of masking or packing tape and use them to firmly secure the bag to the frame of the window.

Make sure you seal the opening completely to prevent moisture from entering the vehicle. For extra protection, complete this process on both the inside and outside of the window frame.

Tape Alone

If you only have tape on hand, you can use long strips of it to seal off the window. You should definitely place tape on both sides of the frame to achieve an adequate seal.

Keep in mind that both of these covering techniques should be very temporary solutions! If you’re covering your window because you don’t have the time to take your vehicle in for auto glass repair, you can always schedule a mobile repair

For your safety, get it done as soon as you possibly can!

Only 1 Auto Glass: Your Twin Cities Source for Quality Auto Glass Repair and Replacement

If you have a chipped, cracked, or completely shattered vehicle window, it’s time to get in touch with our team at Only 1 Auto Glass. <![CDATA[How to Protect a Windshield Crack or Chip Against Summer Heat Extremes ]]>https://only1autoglass.com/Blog/entryid/1396/how-to-protect-a-windshield-crack-or-chip-against-summer-heat-extremesWe all know that winter can be hard on our vehicles, but did you know your car can take a beating during the summer, too? Summer temperatures can wreak havoc on your windshield, which is why you should always take steps to protect it from damage.

The sun and heat can both cause your glass to heat up and expand, which can cause the crack or chip to spread rapidly. If this happens, the crack or chip can become too large to repair, and your entire windshield will need to be replaced.

At Only 1 Auto Glass, we know that when you’re driving, you’re only as safe as your car’s weakest link. If that happens to be your windshield, you should have it repaired promptly to protect the integrity of your vehicle.

And if your windshield is in great shape already, we have a few tips to help you keep it that way.

Park in the Shade

High temperatures can stress even a fully intact windshield, which means they can seriously overstress a windshield with a couple of chips or a minor crack. A shaded spot can help minimize the amount of sun that hits your windshield, preventing it from heating up and contracting, which can cause the chip or crack to grow.

Ideally, you should park in a garage, if possible, but if you must park in the shade of a tree, that’ll suffice temporarily.

Also, keep in mind that debris can easily fall from a tree and impact your already damaged auto glass, which will inevitably necessitate a complete windshield replacement, so choose carefully.

Be Careful Where You Park

During summer, everyone is out and about enjoying the warmer weather — kids frolic in parks, baseball fields are full of activity, and streets are lined with basketball hoops just waiting for a game of pickup.

Flying balls and rogue children’s toys are notorious for causing curbside auto glass damage, so if you can avoid parking on the curb, do it. You should also be careful where you park your vehicle near playgrounds and ball fields since these areas are full of potential auto glass hazards.

So what does all this mean for your vehicle? Unfortunately, it often means a cracked windshield or windows — unless you’re careful about where you park.

Avoid Using a Reflective Shade

Though you want to keep your car cool during the summer, you should not use a reflective windshield shade until the crack or chip is repaired. Reflective shades work in one of two ways to keep your car cooler.

Some shades absorb heat, while others reflect heat. Either option causes more heat to sit on your windshield, which causes your car’s glass to expand. As it expands, the crack or chip can expand, too.

Curious whether that chip or crack can be fixed or if you need entirely new glass? Check out our article on What Types of Windshield Damage Are Eligible.

Slowly Cool Your Car Down

A hot car is inevitable in the summer. Every time you get in your car, and it’s hot, your first reaction is to turn the air conditioning on full blast.

Much like an ice cube will crack if you drop it into a cup of warm water, your windshield can crack suddenly when it’s exposed to dramatic and sudden temperature changes. The immediate temperature difference between the hot and the cold air can cause your windshield glass to contract, which can cause your crack or chip to grow or even shatter quickly.

While you wait for a convenient time to schedule those auto glass repairs you need, make sure you dial up your a/c gradually whenever you need to use it.

Drive With Caution

If you’re prone to driving fast or erratically, you’ll need to change your ways until you get your windshield repaired. Whipping around corners too fast, cruising over speed bumps too quickly, and even hitting potholes with a little too much speed can all cause a glass chip or crack to spread suddenly.

If you tend to slam your doors or trunk, avoid doing that, too. Damaged glass can be delicate, and any amount of impact or considerable vibration can easily encourage the existing damage to grow worse.

Watch Your Speed on Loose Gravel Roads

There may not be many gravel roads in the metro area, but if you’re heading to a rural area for the weekend, drive slowly on dirt roadways.

As a general rule, it’s best to keep your speed at 35 mph or under to avoid kicking up rocks and other debris that can crack your auto glass.

Park Under Covered Areas in Stormy Weather

The Twin Cities has its share of severe weather, and unless you park in a covered space, your auto glass is vulnerable to damage whenever a storm rolls through town.

Just a few of the things that can force you to pursue auto glass repair or replacement after a storm include:

 • Heavy hail

 • High winds capable of lifting and propelling debris

 • Falling tree branches

 • Downed power poles and power lines

 • Downed sign poles

Maintain a Safe Following Distance to Avoid Road Debris

Summer is road construction season in the Twin Cities, and with road construction comes huge trucks carrying gravel and other materials that can damage your auto glass. Some of these materials will inevitably fall off those trucks and end up on the road. When you follow other drivers too closely, their tires can hit that debris and propel it straight at your windshield.

But your auto glass doesn’t have to fall victim to a piece of flying road debris. When you maintain a safe following distance by adhering to the three-second rule, you can protect your windshield from rock chips and cracks for the most part.

If you do end up getting a small rock chip or a minor crack, tending to windshield repairs as promptly as possible will ensure the damage doesn’t spread.

Try Superglue or Nail Polish as a Temporary Fix

Neither nail polish nor superglue is an ideal fix for your windshield – even as a temporary solution. But if you’re really in a pinch and are dealing with a minor crack, you may have some success applying either substance to the crack itself.

After application, gently wipe away any excess glue or nail polish on the area directly outside the crack, being careful not to apply any pressure, which can worsen the damage. This temporary fix is really only suitable when you’re out of town and cannot call a mobile auto glass repair specialist or make it into a shop.

You’ll still need to schedule a windshield repair appointment when you return home, ideally as promptly as possible. Remember that the existing damage may still worsen in the interim because neither glue nor nail polish is truly a recommended solution.

Use Caution When Washing

Much like avoiding using hot water on an icy windshield, if you do notice a chip or crack, washing your windshield in the heat of the day can cause the damage to spread. Spraying cold water on hot, cracked glass creates a sudden temperature difference that causes the glass to react suddenly.

Drive-through, automatic car washes are super convenient when it’s scorching outside, but if you have a crack or chip in your windshield, avoid these types of car washes at all costs. While they won’t expose your auto glass to heat extremes, they will expose it to excessive pressure that can easily cause existing windshield damage to grow worse in a hurry.

Until you get those chips and cracks repaired, be sure to wait until evening when the temperature drops and hand wash your ride whenever it needs a bath. Once the windshield repairs are completed, feel free to use automatic car washes whenever you want to.

Repair Auto Glass Damage Promptly

If your windshield or windows suffer any form of damage – even if it’s just a small rock chip – be sure to have the damage repaired immediately. Small chips and cracks can quickly spread, especially in high heat. And if they grow large enough, they become irreparable.

The best way to avoid more expensive auto glass replacements is to seek out prompt, professional repairs any time you notice even minor imperfections in your auto glass!

<![CDATA[6 To-Dos to Get Your Vehicle Ready for Spring]]>https://only1autoglass.com/Blog/entryid/1395/6-to-dos-to-get-your-vehicle-ready-for-springSpring weather is just around the corner in the Twin Cities, and that means it’s time to start thinking about taking steps to prepare your vehicle for warmer weather! What should you do?

]]>
Spring weather is just around the corner in the Twin Cities, and that means it’s time to start thinking about taking steps to prepare your vehicle for warmer weather! What should you do?

Here are six actions you should take to get your vehicle ready for spring.

1. Replace Windshield Wipers

Check your windshield wipers for wear and tear (ice can be really rough on the rubber), and if they’re in questionable shape, swap them out for new ones. You certainly don’t want to get caught driving in a spring rainstorm with wipers that don’t work as well as they should!

2. Remove Condensation From Your Fuel Tank

Did you know condensation can easily build up inside your fuel tank and diminish your vehicle’s gas mileage and overall performance? If you weren’t previously aware, now you are, and fortunately, you can easily fix the problem.

How? Head to your local auto parts supply store and pick up a bottle of fuel additive that’s designed to eliminate moisture from the tank. Fill up your fuel tank and dump the bottle of additive in, too, and you should be good to go.

3. Schedule Auto Glass Repairs

If your vehicle windows suffered any minor chips or cracks during the winter season, make sure you have the damage repaired as promptly as possible.

Driving with compromised auto glass puts your safety at risk and increases the chance that your passengers may suffer injuries in the event of a collision. You can schedule in-shop or mobile service, but keep in mind that precipitation can make mobile repairs unfeasible.

Spring tends to be pretty rainy in the Twin Cities, so don’t be surprised if you end up having to reschedule mobile service.

Before you schedule your repairs, be sure to check your auto insurance policy to see if your insurer might pay for the cost of service. If you’ve never filed a claim, here’s what you should know about using insurance to pay for auto glass repairs.

4. Remove Winter Tires

Certain types of winter tires (the kind with metal studs) cause excessive asphalt wear when they come into contact with dry roads. But road wear isn’t the only thing you should worry about if you have this type of tire.

Driving on dry roads with studded tires will cause your studs to wear down faster than they should, so you’ll end up needing to replace them sooner than you may want to if you don’t take off promptly when snow and ice are no longer present. If you had special winter tires, make sure you have them swapped out for summer or all-season tires by the state-mandated deadline.

For more information on Minnesota laws regarding winter tire removal, check out the 2022 Minnesota Statutes on transportation.

5. Get Your Brakes Checked

Winter weather and driving can be rough on your brakes, so it’s important that you get them checked when spring rolls around.

If you know how to do this yourself, great! But if you aren’t sure, take your vehicle to a mechanic who can examine your brake pads and rotors for excessive or uneven wear. And if necessary, have the pads and/or rotors replaced.

6. Perform a Thorough Cleaning

Last but certainly not least, clean your ride!

Give the body a thorough washing, and make doubly sure the undercarriage is totally clean. If you didn’t wash your vehicle regularly throughout winter, its undercarriage may have collected quite a bit of salt, which can cause significant corrosion if left to sit.

If you can, stop by an automatic car wash that has an undercarriage washing feature to ensure you get the job done thoroughly.
